# Cart IDs

> The short reference shoppers quote to your team — and how to choose its format.

Every tracked cart has a **Cart ID**. The same ID appears:

* on the storefront widget (**Your Cart ID: …**),
* in support request emails,
* in the dashboard, cart pages and draft order list.

A shopper can read it out on the phone or paste it into an email, and your team can search for it on the dashboard to find the cart instantly.

## Choose a format

Go to **Settings → General settings → Cart ID Display** and pick a **Cart ID format**:

**Text ID (default)**

A short, unique code such as `v_yna3sj0b2`.

* Stable: it stays the same for that shopper on the same browser.
* Doesn't reveal how many carts your store gets.

**Cart Number**

A running number starting from `#1`: `#1`, `#2`, `#3`…

* Easier to read out over the phone.
* The first time you switch this on, your **existing carts are numbered in order** too, so older carts get a number as well.

Click **Save**. The new format is used everywhere straight away — on your storefront from the next page load.

## Search by Cart ID

On the dashboard, type the ID into the search box. Both formats work, the `#` is optional, and part of an ID is enough — `42` finds `#42` (and also `#142` and `#420`, so type the full number when you have it).

## How Cart IDs relate to shoppers

Each new cart is always tracked as its own row on the dashboard. The two formats differ in what the ID follows:

| | Text ID | Cart Number |
| - | - | - |
| **Follows** | The shopper's browser | The individual cart |
| **Returning shopper starts a new cart** | Same ID as before — searching it shows all of that shopper's carts | Gets the next number |

* A shopper keeps the same Text ID on the same device and browser.
* Shoppers who block cookies and storage (for example, in some private browsing modes) still get a Cart ID, but it may change between visits.
