# Draft order builder

> Customise products, quantities, properties, customer, attributes, metafields and tags before sending a draft order to Shopify.

The builder (**Build Draft Order**) is where you prepare a draft order before it goes to Shopify. Open it with **Create Customize Cart** on a cart page, **Customize Draft** or **Continue Editing** on the Draft Orders page, or **Create New Draft**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Changes in the builder affect **only the draft order**. The shopper's live cart stays exactly as it is.

## Layout

> **Main column**
>
> **Products** — the line items, quantities, properties and total.
>
> **Metafields** — your store's draft order metafields, if you've defined any.

> **Sidebar**
>
> **Customer** · **Order Details** (notes, attributes and the create button) · **Tags**

## Products

| Action | How |
| - | - |
| **Add products** | Click **Add product**. Shopify's product picker opens — select one or more products or variants and click **Add**. |
| **Change quantity** | Type in the quantity box. Quantities must be 1 or more; a red message appears if one isn't. |
| **Remove a product** | Click the **×** at the end of the line. |
| **Line item properties** | Click **Add Property** or **Edit Properties** under the product. In **Edit Line Item Properties**, add **Name**/**Value** pairs and click **Done**. |

Properties appear as blue badges under the product. Properties whose name starts with an underscore (`_`) are hidden, as they are in Shopify.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Editing line item properties needs the **Advanced** plan or above.

## Metafields

If your store has [metafield definitions](https://help.shopify.com/manual/custom-data/metafields) for **draft orders**, they're listed here with their name and type. Type a value into any field you want to fill in. Values are saved with the draft order. The card is hidden when you don't have any draft order metafield definitions.

## Customer

Works the same way as on the [cart page](https://codebeans-customer-cart-manager.mintlify.site/carts/cart-details.md#customer): **Add customer** to search or create one, or use the **⋯** menu to change or remove the customer. When you pick a customer, their tags and metafields are brought into the draft order.

## Order Details

* **Notes** — the draft order note, visible in Shopify and on the invoice.
* **Cart Attributes** — key–value pairs saved on the draft order. Click **Add Attribute** to add one, or the delete icon to remove one. *(Advanced plan or above.)*

## Tags

Click the tags box (or the edit icon) to open **Add tags**:

* Type to search your existing tags, or click **Add "…"** to create a new one.
* Click **↕ Frequently used** to see the tags you use most.
* Click **Save** to apply.

## Saving vs. creating

The builder has two kinds of save:

| Button | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Save** (in the save bar at the top) | Saves your work **in the app only**. The draft stays marked **Building** and nothing is sent to Shopify. Use it to come back later. |
| **Create Draft Order** / **Create Shopify Draft** | Creates the draft order **in Shopify** and returns you to the Draft Orders list. |
| **Update Draft Order** / **Update Shopify Draft** | For drafts already in Shopify. Asks you to confirm — *"This will modify the live draft order in Shopify"* — then click **Update Draft**. |

**Discard** in the save bar throws away unsaved changes. The create and update buttons stay disabled until the draft has at least one product.

## After it's in Shopify

Open the draft order from the Draft Orders page (**View Draft**) or the cart's **Conversion Summary**. From Shopify admin you can add discounts and shipping, **Send invoice**, or **Mark as paid**.

Edits you make to the draft order in Shopify — items, quantities, tags, note — are copied back to the app's Draft Orders list automatically. When the shopper pays, Shopify creates the order as usual, and if the order's email matches the cart's customer, the cart is marked **✓ Order Placed**.
