# Fees & surcharges

> Add packaging, handling, duty, ice-pack or shipping-protection fees to carts automatically — locked in the cart and at checkout, on any Shopify plan.

Fees & Surcharges adds extra charges to a shopper's order based on rules you set. A fee can be a flat amount or a percentage, apply to the whole order or only to certain products, and be limited to certain countries.

Shoppers see each fee as its **own line** in the cart and at checkout, with the name and image you choose. They can't remove it or change its quantity.

## What you can charge

| Fee | Example rule |
| - | - |
| **Packaging fee** | $2 on every order under $50 |
| **Handling fee** | \$3 per item for products tagged `oversized` |
| **Ice pack fee** | \$3 per item for products tagged `chilled` |
| **Import duty** | 10% of the order for shoppers in the United States |
| **Shipping protection** | 3% of the order, minimum $1, maximum $15 |
| **Cash on delivery fee** | \$2 on every order |
| **Sustainability fee** | \$1 on every order |

You start from one of these presets or from a blank fee.

## How it works

**1. Create a fee**

In the app, open **Fees & Surcharges** and click **Create fee**. Choose the price and when it applies. The live preview shows exactly what a test cart would be charged. [Create a fee →](https://codebeans-customer-cart-manager.mintlify.site/fees/create-a-fee.md)

**2. Turn on the app embed**

Switch on **Cb Fees & Surcharges** in your theme's app embeds so the fee shows as its own cart line. [Storefront setup →](https://codebeans-customer-cart-manager.mintlify.site/fees/storefront.md)

**3. Watch what fees earn**

Fee revenue and profit appear on the Fees page and in Analytics (Advanced plan and above). [Reporting →](https://codebeans-customer-cart-manager.mintlify.site/fees/reporting.md)

## Where fees are charged

| Where | Charged |
| - | :-: |
| Online store cart and checkout | ✓ |
| Express checkout (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) and **Buy it now** | ✓ |
| Draft orders | ✓ |
| Headless storefronts using the Storefront API cart | ✓ |
| Point of Sale | Coming later |
| Order edits and subscription renewals | ✗ |

Fees are priced by Shopify itself at checkout (through a cart transform), so they are charged even where the storefront script can't run — for example **Buy it now** buttons. There, the fee is added inside the product's line instead of as a separate line.

## Fees by plan

| | Free | Basic | Advanced | Enterprise |
| - | :-: | :-: | :-: | :-: |
| **Active fees at once** | 1 | 5 | 20 | 20 |
| Fee revenue & profit reporting | | | ✓ | ✓ |

You can create as many fees as you like as **drafts**; the limit is on fees that are **active** at the same time. See [Plans & billing](https://codebeans-customer-cart-manager.mintlify.site/plans-and-billing.md).
