# SMTP setup

> Send notification emails through the built-in CB server, or through your own email provider and domain.

Go to **Email Notifications → SMTP Setup** and choose an **Email Provider**.

**CB SMTP Server (Default)**

Works out of the box — there's nothing to configure.

Emails are sent by Codebeans with the sender name **Customer Support**. Shoppers who reply reach the Codebeans sending address, not you — so if you want replies to come to your inbox, use your own SMTP server.

**Use Custom SMTP Server**

Send through your own provider — for example Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho Mail, Amazon SES, SendGrid, Postmark or Mailgun — so emails come from your own address and replies come back to you.

Choosing this option shows **Server Details** and **Sender Identity**.

## Server Details

| Field | Example |
| - | - |
| **Host** | `smtp.gmail.com`, `smtp.sendgrid.net` |
| **Port** | `465` (SSL) or `587` (STARTTLS) |
| **SMTP Username** | Usually your full email address, or an API username |
| **SMTP Password** | Your SMTP password, app password or API key |
| **Use SSL/TLS (Secure)** | Tick for port `465`. Leave unticked for `587`. |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Fill in **all four** fields — host, port, username and password. If any of them is empty, emails quietly fall back to the default CB server.

> [!TIP]
>
> Most providers need an **app password** or **API key** for SMTP, not your normal login password. Google and Microsoft accounts with two-step verification always do.

## Sender Identity

*This name and email will appear in the customer's inbox.*

| Field | Example |
| - | - |
| **Sender name** | `Acme Outdoor Support` |
| **Sender email** | `support@acmeoutdoor.com` |

Use a sender email your provider lets you send from — usually the same address as the SMTP username, or an address on a domain you've verified with the provider. Otherwise emails may be rejected or land in spam.

Click **Save** at the top of the page.

## Test your setup

Open any template from the **Customer Alerts** or **Merchant Alerts** tab and use **Send Test Email**. If the test arrives, your settings work. See [Email templates](https://codebeans-customer-cart-manager.mintlify.site/notifications/email-templates.md#send-a-test-email).

## Troubleshooting

> **The test email never arrives**
>
> Check your spam folder first. Then check the host, port and the **Use SSL/TLS** box — port `465` needs it ticked, port `587` needs it unticked — and make sure you're using an app password or API key where your provider requires one.

> **Emails still come from 'Customer Support'**
>
> Your custom server isn't being used. Make sure **Use Custom SMTP Server** is selected and that host, port, username and password are all filled in, then save.

> **Emails arrive but go to spam**
>
> Use a sender email on your own domain and make sure that domain has SPF and DKIM records set up with your email provider.

> **I want to go back to the default server**
>
> Choose **CB SMTP Server (Default)** and click **Save**. Your custom server details are kept in case you switch back.
