Fees are charged by Shopify at checkout whether or not you do anything else. To show each fee as its own line in the cart, switch on the fees app embed in your theme.

Turn on the app embed

1

Open the theme editor

On the Fees & Surcharges page, if the embed is off you’ll see Show fees as their own cart line — click Open theme editor. Or go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds.
2

Switch it on

Turn on Cb Fees & Surcharges and click Save.
It’s separate from the Cb Customer Cart Widget embed, so you can use either one on its own.
App embeds are saved per theme. If you publish a new theme, switch the embed on again there.

What shoppers see

  • When the cart matches a fee, the fee is added as a separate line with its name, image and price — for example Packaging fee · $2.00.
  • If the cart stops matching (say, a product is removed), the fee line is removed automatically.
  • Locked fees can’t be removed or have their quantity changed. If a shopper tries, a short message appears at the bottom of the page (your shopper messages, or the built-in ones).
  • Fee products can’t be added to the cart on their own.
  • Country-based and checkout-only fees don’t appear in the cart; they’re added at checkout.

Themes

The embed works with any Online Store 2.0 theme that updates its cart without reloading the page (Dawn and most current themes). Themes that reload the cart page see the fee after the page reloads once.

Without the app embed

Fees are still charged at checkout. In the cart, the fee is included inside the product’s line (the line shows the product with the fee as part of it) rather than as a separate line. The same happens with Buy it now buttons and headless storefronts, where the storefront script doesn’t run.
